Use an Autonumber field to give each record a number automatically. Add a formula if you want a recognizable reference such as ORD-001 or TASK-001.

Add an Autonumber field

  1. Select Add field → Autonumber.
  2. Enter a Title, such as Order number.
  3. Select Create.

Zite supplies the number for existing and new records.

The number is read-only. You don’t need to enter it yourself, and sorting the table doesn’t change it.
Numbers can have gaps, for example after records are deleted. Use them as references, not as a count of the records currently in your table.

Add a prefix or leading zeros

Keep the Autonumber field, then add a separate Formula field:
  1. Select Add field → Formula and name it Order reference.
  2. Select Generate with AI and describe the format:
Use Order number to make a reference beginning with ORD- and at least three digits. For example, number 1 should show as ORD-001.
  3. Select Generate, then Create. Check a few records to confirm the format.

Keep the original number and use a formula for the readable reference.

You can hide the Autonumber field from a view once the formatted reference is working. Keep the field in the table so the formula can use it. If the reference should identify records in linked-record pickers, set it as the primary field.
